Chassis Code: EM1
The Dharma: "The 8,000 RPM Scream."
The 6th Generation Civic (Chassis Code: EM1), specifically the 1999–2000 Si, was a dedicated performance platform disguised as a coupe.
While the base models were efficient commuters, the Si was engineered with a completely different logic. It was available only as a coupe and only with a manual transmission. This was not a trim package; it was a distinct mechanical asset.
"The Stiffened Structure"
The EM1 chassis was reinforced at the factory to handle the increased stress of spirited driving.
Structural Rigidity: Honda added a front tower brace (standard) and stiffer anti-roll bars (26mm front / 13mm rear).
Suspension: It retained the sacred 4-wheel Double Wishbone layout, but with Si-specific progressive-rate springs and harder dampers.
The Visuals: Available in three iconic colors: Flamenco Black Pearl, Milano Red, and the legendary Electron Blue Pearl (which became the signature color of the era).
"The DOHC Revelation"
Engine Code: B16A2 Type: Inline-4 DOHC VTEC Displacement: 1595cc
This engine is the crown jewel. Previous Si models were SOHC (Single Overhead Cam). The EM1 introduced DOHC (Dual Overhead Cam) to the US Civic.
The Math: 100 horsepower per liter. Naturally aspirated. In 1999, this was supercar-level efficiency (beating Ferrari in specific output).
The Experience: The engine had practically no torque low down. You had to wring it out. It didn't wake up until 5,500 RPM.
The Scream: When VTEC engaged at 5,600 RPM, the intake note changed audibly from a hum to a scream. It pulled violently all the way to the 8,000 RPM redline.
The Output:
Horsepower: 160 hp @ 7,600 rpm.
Torque: 111 lb-ft @ 7,000 rpm.
"The Linkage"
Transmission Code: S4C The EM1 used a close-ratio 5-speed manual that is often cited as having the best shift feel of any front-wheel-drive car in history.
Synchros: It featured dual-cone synchronizers on 2nd gear to handle quick shifts at high RPM.
Shift Knob: A weighted, leather-wrapped knob that fell perfectly to hand.
Feedback: Mechanical, not vague. You could feel the gears mesh.
"The Target"
The EM1 became the most stolen car in America for a reason: The parts were universal gold.
Interchangeability: The B16A2 engine could be dropped into almost any other Honda chassis (Gen 4, Gen 5) with minimal effort.
The Culture: This car defined the "Fast and Furious" era. It proved that a 1.6L Civic could embarrass Mustangs if the driver knew how to keep the revs up.
