In Zen, we practice shugyo (austere training) to refine the self. In engineering, Honda practices kaizen (continuous improvement) to refine the machine.
We honor this lineage. We acknowledge that our current practice is built upon the efforts of those who came before us. The FE1 chassis does not exist in a vacuum; it is the current manifestation of a philosophy that began in 1973.
To understand the 2026 Civic Si, one must study the transmission of its core DNA: Lightness, Agility, and the absolute connection between human and machine. While the "Si" badge technically debuted in Generation 3, the spirit of "Sport" was born immediately. The Gen 1 RS and Gen 2 S are the ancestors that proved a small, front-wheel-drive car could be thrilling.

Chassis Code: SB1 The Dharma: "Road Sailing."
Before "Sport Injected," there was RS (Road Sailing). Launched in Japan in 1974, this was the proof of concept. While the world saw an economy car, Honda engineers saw a lightweight weapon. It featured dual Keihin carburetors and a stiffer suspension, teaching the world that horsepower is irrelevant if the car weighs nothing.
Engine: 1.2L EB1 (76 hp - JDM Spec)
Key Feature: Dual Carburetors & 5-Speed Manual Transmission.
Legacy: The "RS" badge is the grandfather of the "Si."
Chassis Code: SL The Dharma: "Refinement."
The "Super Civic." As the car grew slightly larger, the need for a dedicated sport trim became clear. In 1983, the "S" trim was introduced. It replaced the CVCC eco-tires with Michelins, added a rear stabilizer bar, and stiffened the chassis. It was the direct testbed for the Si philosophy: handling > power.
Engine: 1.5L EM (69 hp)
Key Feature: Dedicated sport suspension and red accent badges.
Legacy: The immediate predecessor. It cleared the path for the fuel injection revolution.

The genesis. While the S (Sport) trim existed, the Si (Sport Injected) brought fuel injection to the masses. It wasn't about raw horsepower; it was about response.

Legacy: Established the formula: Lightweight chassis + willing engine = Joy.

The era where Honda embarrassed supercars on tight circuits. This generation introduced the legendary double-wishbone suspension setup, a level of engineering sophistication previously reserved for Formula 1.

Legacy: The layout that defined "Honda Handling" for decades.

The introduction of VTEC to the SOHC engines. The rounded "biodesign" aesthetic took over. This is arguably the most modified chassis in automotive history.

For the US market, this was the arrival of the DOHC VTEC B-series in a Civic. Available only as a coupe and often seen in Electron Blue Pearl. If you know, you know.

Key Feature: 100 hp per liter naturally aspirated.
Legacy: The holy grail of the "Golden Era."
Chassis Code: EP3 The Dharma: "Function over Form."
Honda moved production to the UK and built a "breadvan" hatchback. It was controversial for switching to MacPherson struts, but it gave us the K-Series engine and the rally-style dashboard shifter.
Engine: 2.0L K20A3 (160 hp)
Key Feature: Dash-mounted shifter.
Legacy: Underappreciated in its time; now recognized as a chaotic, fun masterpiece.

The high-water mark for naturally aspirated Honda performance. It featured a true helical Limited Slip Differential (LSD) as standard, fixing the front-wheel-drive struggle for traction. The Z-rating redline was strictly strictly business.

Legacy: The last of the high-revving screamers.

Legacy: Proven that a Turbo Civic could still have soul.

The current moment. The FE1 strips away the aggressive styling of the 10th gen for a cleaner, more sophisticated look. It retains the 1.5T but adds the rev-matching system from the Type R, creating the smoothest manual transmission experience in the segment.
Engine: 1.5L Turbo L15CA (200 hp)
Key Feature: Individual Mode, Rev-Matching, Single-Mass Flywheel.
Status: The current vessel for the Way of the Heart.

By practice, I am Dōshin ("Way of the Heart"), a student of the Roshis at the Buddhist Temple of Toledo. My training is governed by the acceptance of chaos, the study of the self, and the absolute truth of the present moment.
Why the Civic Si? Because it is the physical embodiment of the Middle Way. It is not the fastest car (excess), nor is it a basic commuter (deficiency). It sits perfectly in the center: engaging, precise, and demanding.
I approach this build not as a mechanic seeking horsepower, but as a practitioner seeking clarity. In a world of automatic transmissions and unhandled exceptions, the manual gearbox remains one of the few places where intention and action are perfectly synchronized.
The Lineage Continues. Just as I bow to the teachers who came before me, I respect the engineers who iterated this chassis from 1984 to today. This site is my documentation of that respect.
