Chassis Code: EG (Hatch) / EJ (Coupe)
The Dharma: "Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control."
The 5th Generation Civic (Chassis Code: EG for Hatch, EJ for Coupe), released in 1992, abandoned the sharp angles of the 80s for pure aerodynamics.
The design language was called "Samba Style" in Japan—festive, rounded, and organic. In the US, it became known as the "Bubble." But beneath the soft curves lay a hardened chassis that would become the canvas for the global tuner revolution.
"The Golden Ratio"
Honda stretched the wheelbase and widened the track, giving the car a more planted stance.
Double Wishbone Continuation: The legendary suspension layout from the Gen 4 (EF) was retained but refined with longer travel dampers.
The "Floating" Hood: The cowl was lowered even further, and the dashboard was slimmed down, creating a sense of openness that modern cars (with their high beltlines) cannot replicate.
Safety: This generation introduced driver-side airbags and side-impact beams, adding weight but significantly improving structural integrity.
"VTEC Kicked In"
Engine Code: D16Z6 Type: Inline-4 SOHC VTEC Displacement: 1590cc
This is the defining feature of Gen 5. The Si trim introduced VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) to the Single Overhead Cam engine.
The Logic: An engine needs short valve lift for fuel economy at low RPM, and high valve lift for power at high RPM. Before VTEC, you had to choose one.
The Solution: A third "wild" cam lobe sits between the two normal lobes. At 4,800 RPM, a hydraulic pin locks the rocker arms together, forcing the valves to follow the wild profile.
The Output:
Horsepower: 125 hp @ 6,600 rpm.
Torque: 106 lb-ft @ 5,200 rpm.
Redline: 7,200 rpm.
"Hydraulic Precision"
The cable clutch was retired. The Gen 5 introduced a Hydraulic Clutch system.
The Feel: Smoother engagement and self-adjusting. It required less physical effort, making it more livable in traffic without losing the "bite."
The gearing: The S20 transmission used closer ratios than the base models, keeping the small engine in the VTEC engagement window.
"The Fast and The Furious"
For the first time, Honda offered a 2-door Coupe (EJ1) alongside the Hatchback.
The Si Coupe (EX): In a confusing move, the Coupe's top trim was called "EX" in the US, but it shared the Si's D16Z6 engine and suspension.
Cultural Impact: This body style became the poster child for the import tuner scene. Its sleek profile and interchangeable parts made it the default choice for engine swaps (B-Series, K-Series).
